Marble Surface Finishes: Choosing Between Polished, Honed, Sandblasted and Brushed
The same marble slab takes on a completely different character depending on the surface finish applied: a polished surface reflects light and deepens the veins; a honed surface gives a matte, calm look; sandblasted and brushed surfaces bring out the texture and add slip resistance. The finish is not just an aesthetic preference but a technical decision that determines safety, ease of maintenance and the service life of the material.
In this guide we explain the main surface finishes applied at Onur Maden's production facility in Bursa, the advantages of each and which finish should be preferred in which space.
Polished Finish
A polished finish is obtained by working the slab with progressively finer abrasive discs and polishing heads until it reaches a mirror shine. The colour depth and vein richness of the marble come out best on this surface; the warm reds of Rosso Venato or the fine grey veins of Bianco Dolomite look most impressive when polished.
Polished surfaces are ideal for lobbies, reception desks, wall cladding, kitchen worktops and interior floors. Because the pores are closed, it is the finish with the highest stain resistance. On the other hand, it can be slippery in wet areas and may lose its shine outdoors over time, so it is not preferred around pools and on terraces.
Honed Finish
A honed finish is a smooth but matte surface obtained by stopping the polishing process before the final buffing stage. As it does not reflect light, it gives the space a calm, contemporary and natural character. It shows scratches less than a polished surface, which is an important advantage in heavily used areas.
Honed surfaces are widely preferred for bathroom floors, corridors, offices, shops and minimalist interior designs. Neutral-toned stones such as Shana Grey and Natural Dolomite are particularly well suited to a honed finish. Since the pores remain open, a suitable sealer is recommended.
Sandblasted Finish
A sandblasted finish is a finely textured, matte surface created by blasting the slab with abrasive particles at high pressure. It has a high slip-resistance value and is durable against external factors. The colour tone appears slightly lighter and softer than on a polished surface.
It is one of the most suitable finishes for exterior façade cladding, pool surrounds, terraces, outdoor stairs and landscaping. Indoors it provides a safe floor in wet areas.
Brushed (Leather) Finish
A brushed finish is obtained by working the stone with special brushes so that it acquires a slightly undulating, silky texture to the touch. Also known as a 'leather' finish, it combines the calm of a honed surface with a subtle sense of depth. In veined stones, texture and pattern stand out together. It is increasingly preferred for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity tops, fireplace surrounds and boutique hotel designs.
Tumbled (Antique) Finish
A tumbled finish is obtained when cut-to-size pieces acquire softened edges and a naturally worn appearance in special drums or through a combination of brushing and acid treatment. In rustic, Mediterranean and classic-style projects, courtyards and garden floors, it creates a warm and timeless effect. The tumbled version of Natural Dolomite is frequently requested for projects of this style.
Practical Criteria for Choosing the Right Finish
For slip resistance in wet and outdoor areas choose sandblasted, brushed or honed finishes; for visual impact in dry interiors choose polished.
In areas with heavy foot traffic, honed and brushed finishes that show scratches and wear less are advantageous.
For stain resistance on kitchen worktops, consider a polished or brushed finish together with a suitable sealer.
On exterior façades choose honed or sandblasted finishes to avoid the risk of loss of shine.
Using different finishes together in the same project provides both safety and visual hierarchy between spaces: for example polished in the lobby, honed in wet rooms and sandblasted on the terrace.
